Poloche and Elliot were officers with the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections, Weeks was a U.S. Marshal assigned to the Fugitive Task Force, and Eyer was a 6-year veteran of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. On Wednesday, a processional carried Weeks' body from the Medical Examiner's Office to the Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville. A stretch of Interstate 77 from the I-85 interchange was closed during the procession. For those wishing to send personal gifts, cards, or item donations, they can be delivered or mailed to 601 E.
The four officers in total leave behind families with eight children, including young kids. Authorities have identified Samuel "Sam" Poloche, Joshua Eyer, William "Alden" Elliot and Thomas M. Weeks, Jr., as the four law enforcement officers who died in Monday's shooting in Charlotte. People looking for information on how to donate to the families of the four fallen officers or to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation can visit charlottepolicefoundation.org.

A total of eight officers were shot Monday, according to police, and a ninth officer broke his foot, when a suspect opened fire from the upstairs of a Charlotte home. The House of Representatives has 435 members, with each of the 50 states electing varying numbers of legislators according to the size of their population. The number rose following the ratification of the Constitution by North Carolina and Rhode Island in 1790; the first Congress (1789–91) adjourned with 65 representatives. Two additional representatives were added temporarily after the admission of Alaska and Hawaii as states in 1959, but at the next legislative apportionment, membership returned to 435, the number authorized by a law enacted in 1941. Launched in 2004, GovTrack helps everyone learn about and track the activities of the United States Congress. Ballotpedia features 487,090 encyclopedic articles written and curated by our professional staff of editors, writers, and researchers. The U.S. House of Representatives has chosen the winner of a presidential election on two occasions—1800 and 1824.
Partisan mix of the House by state
The Arkansas House Convenes - Arkansas House of Representatives
An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel. John Boehner was elected speaker when the 112th Congress convened on January 5, 2011, and was subsequently re-elected twice, at the start of the 113th and 114th Congresses. The power of the speaker was greatly augmented during the tenure of the Republican Thomas Brackett Reed (1889–1891, 1895–1899). Reed, however, declared that members who were in the chamber but refused to vote would still count for the purposes of determining a quorum.
Democratic Caucus Chairman
Finally, it was agreed to exclude both delegations from the election and a speaker was finally chosen on December 17. The House also has one permanent committee that is not a standing committee, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and occasionally may establish temporary or advisory committees, such as the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. This latter committee, created in the 110th Congress and reauthorized for the 111th, has no jurisdiction over legislation and must be chartered anew at the start of every Congress. The House also appoints members to serve on joint committees, which include members of the Senate and House. Some joint committees oversee independent government bodies; for instance, the Joint Committee on the Library oversees the Library of Congress. Other joint committees serve to make advisory reports; for example, there exists a Joint Committee on Taxation.
The Legislative Process
Articles with the “HISTORY.com Editors” byline have been written or edited by the HISTORY.com editors, including Amanda Onion, Missy Sullivan, Matt Mullen and Christian Zapata. Given the shortcomings of the government created by the Articles of Confederation, the framers soon realized that a bicameral legislature at the national level would foster a more representative central government. The Articles of Confederation were drafted in 1777 and ratified in 1781, but the government they established soon proved inadequate to the task of governing the large and boisterous new nation.
House officers
This is called a pocket veto, and if Congress still wants to pass the legislation, they must begin the entire process anew. Interestingly, although the Senate is sometimes referred to as the “upper body,” and the House as the “lower body,” the two legislative bodies hold the same amount of power within the U.S. system. Both must agree to, vote on and adopt pieces of identical legislation (known as bills) in order for the legislation to become law. The U.S. House of Representatives is the lower house of Congress and plays a vital role, along with the Senate, in the process of moving proposed legislation to law.
Partisan role
In California’s 47th congressional district, the UDP spent $4.6m opposing the Democratic candidate Dave Min, who ultimately advanced to the general election. The group has also spent $2.4m backing the Democrat Sarah Elfreth in the third district of Maryland, which will hold its primaries later this month. Echoing one of the many grievances shared by hard-right Republicans who opposed all of the aid measures, Mr. Good said his support for “Israel’s right to defend itself remains unshakeable” but that he disagreed with a measure that would add to the nation’s debt. If Congress is in session and the President takes no action within 10 days, the bill becomes law. If Congress adjourns before 10 days are up and the President takes no action, then the bill dies and Congress may not vote to override.
Hastert played a much less prominent role than other contemporary speakers, being overshadowed by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and President George W. Bush. A further dominating element of House organization is the committee system, under which the membership is divided into specialized groups for purposes such as holding hearings, preparing bills for the consideration of the entire House, and regulating House procedure. Almost all bills are first referred to a committee, and ordinarily the full House cannot act on a bill until the committee has “reported” it for floor action.
Library of Congress
Established by Article I of the Constitution, the Legislative Branch consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which together form the United States Congress. The Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to enact legislation and declare war, the right to confirm or reject many Presidential appointments, and substantial investigative powers. Although this process means that only a fraction of proposed legislation actually becomes law, the framers of the Constitution wanted careful deliberation in which diverse views are heard and our rights as citizens are represented and defended.
After being introduced, a bill is referred to the appropriate committee for review. There are 17 Senate committees, with 70 subcommittees, and 23 House committees, with 104 subcommittees. The committees are not set in stone, but change in number and form with each new Congress as required for the efficient consideration of legislation. Each committee oversees a specific policy area, and the subcommittees take on more specialized policy areas. For example, the House Committee on Ways and Means includes subcommittees on Social Security and Trade. Members of the House are elected every two years and must be 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and a resident of the state (but not necessarily the district) they represent.
One of the most influential speakers in history was Democrat Sam Rayburn.[48] Rayburn had the most cumulative time as speaker in history, holding office from 1940 to 1947, 1949 to 1953, and 1955 to 1961. He helped shape many bills, working quietly in the background with House committees. He also helped ensure the passage of several domestic measures and foreign assistance programs advocated by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Both chambers of Congress have extensive investigative powers, and may compel the production of evidence or testimony toward whatever end they deem necessary. Members of Congress spend much of their time holding hearings and investigations in committee. Refusal to cooperate with a congressional subpoena can result in charges of contempt of Congress, which could result in a prison term.
Senators’ terms are staggered so that about one-third of the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Senators must be 30 years of age, U.S. citizens for at least nine years, and residents of the state they represent. The Speaker of the House is also the second person in the U.S. presidential line of succession—the order in which presidents are replaced if they die, resign or are removed from office—after the Vice President and before the President pro tempore of the Senate.
Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives. One primary way that Congress conducts oversight is through hearings. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs are both devoted to overseeing and reforming government operations, and each committee conducts oversight in its policy area.

The film’s greatest impact for Adcock was its role in rekindling his love for his longtime band, the Lafayette Marquis. Auditions for the movie included a long weekend session in New Orleans, where the ensemble ran through multiple originals and covers, all live in one take. Adcock is notoriously obsessive in the recording studio — it’s been 10 years since his last solo album and 20 years since his debut — and those cuts fueled a renaissance of sorts. It’s a co-write with Keith Frank, with the song’s insistent hook based off an accordion riff Adcock first heard Frank play at Hamilton’s in the ‘90s.

Add a shot of Adcock’s tremolo, a Bo Diddley beat and a nonsensical chorus in the tradition of “Louie Louie,” and it’s the perfect groove for Road House’s signature melee. Food and supply costs have skyrocketed, good help is hard to find (and keep) and many people, post-pandemic, don’t eat out as much as they used to. They are matte, but not powdery 'dead' sort of matte, and feel neither drying or moisturising. For the perfect pout I'd still exfoliate and maybe line the lips. Here's what the colors look like applied from the bullet, no brush or lip liner. ‘Miranda May’, inspired by Miranda Kerr, is a sunny poppy coral, with a demi-matte finish (I consider it demi-matte because it still had a bit of shine to it). The formula was a bit difficult with this one – it was a thinner formula, that applied slightly patchy, and moved around on my lips when I swiped the product for an additional coat.
The texture is thin but smoth, and it does feel a little clingy, though it was neither drying nor hydrating on me. The coverage was mostly opaque, not quite what I’d say is buildable (it’s pretty pigmented right out of the gate; hard to sheer it out without becoming very uneven). Chanel Tentation (238) (LE, $45.00) is darker (95% similar). Dior Forever Cherie (525) (P, $45.00) is lighter (95% similar).
The lipsticks themselves have an embossed lipstick print, and have square-cut tip (makes for a super easy application, especially when carving out the shape of your lips). While these lipsticks cost a pretty penny, I would definitely recommend treating yourself this holiday season, and grabbing one for yourself. In July 1969, as Victor Callewaert vividly recalls, they were handed the keys to the building, and what awaited them inside was truly astonishing. He recounts finding a box of keys devoid of any names or door numbers. With curiosity as their guide, they explored the hotel, leaving keys in the locks of doors that they managed to unlock. They soon discovered the puzzling layout, with one door leading to six rooms, if they could even be called that. When they took charge of the building, it boasted over 200 small guest rooms, each with its own unique characteristics. Mrs. Webster retained ownership of the Island House until her passing in 1938.
